Dubbing workshop evaluation.

For this workshop me and Ali who I was working with had to find a scene from a movie or TV show and mute out all the sound. After we had deleted the sound, we re recorded all of the dialogue with our own voices and placed it over the characters that were talking in the scene. For this workshop, the main thing that we had to focus on was the timing and technical accuracy the lip syncing and editing. Most of the editing was done by Ali and he had to focus a lot on making sure that all of the recordings matched up with the two different characters within the scene. The computer software that we used to record our voices reading from the script from the scene was iMovie on one of the college's MacBooks. We recorded the script using this software and we also used the same software to place the recording over the scene and edit it so that the timing all matches. The area that me and Ali recorded in was one of the radio rooms. We decided to use this room because it didn't have any background sound to interrupt the recording and final outcome of the whole thing. The first thing I would say that went well with this workshop was being able to record the whole script quite quickly. The recording went well because it only took a few takes and was very simple to carry out. What went wrong i that we missed some things in our recordings such as deep breaths and sounds from characters that we had forgotten to record. The thing that I would do different if I was to do this again is that I would include all of the things that we missed.

Voiceover Workshop Evaluation

For this workshop we had to record our own voiceover which we then added over a scene from the film Children of MenFirst of all I wrote the script on Microsoft Word and the device that we used to record the voiceover was an iPhone 7. We used the voice memos app and the internal mic built into the iPhone was used as we didn't attatch an external microphone to the device. We created the voiceover to portray what the main character Theo was thinking at different points during the film. I think that the voiceover we created was effective because we were able to clearly express what Theo was feeling. The voiceover also created further suspense into the scene. I think that one of the things that went well was how quickly we were able to get everything recorded and placed into the computer so that we could edit it. In our group I was the person that wrote the script and decided which seconds in the clip, Ali then recorded his voice reading out the script with different tones for each of the sentenced to make sure that it added meaning to the scene and made it feel as if it was actually coming from Theo. The location where we recorded our script was at the bottom of one of the staircases in the college. This was a good location for us to record because it was a quiet setting and when we recorded, an echo affect was created which I think worked well with the clip. After we had finished recording the whole script, we sent the recording to our emails so that we could transfer it to the computer to begin editing it. The software that we used to edit our recording so that we could match it up to the correct times in the clip was Garageband. Ali was in control of the editing and he was able to put each part of the recording in the correct/matching part of the correlating clip. Next time if I was to this again I would make the script longer and include a lot more detail in it.

Unit 38 Soundtrack production for the moving image

Unit 38 Soundtrack production for the moving image

In this assignment I am going to be analyzing the elements of sound in different scenes from moving image productions. This will include scenes from movies and television programmes, postproduction studio sound and live location sound.  I will be talking about why certain sounds are used in specific scenes and using key terms to analyse these scenes.

When I am talking about the specific times, these are relevant in the linked YouTube video rather than the actual timings in the film.

The first film that I am going to be analyzing the film Children of Men specifically the car scene where they are being shot at. YouTube link for this scene:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfBSncUspBk . At the beginning of the car scene, the first thing that the audience hears is some energetic and fast paced music. This music in the scene is diegetic as it is coming from the stereo system in the car meaning that characters in the film are also hearing the music. I think that this sound mix was included in the scene because it shows all of the characters together and suggests that Julian and Theo are re-connecting with each other and makes the audience think that they might get back together. The music coming from the car can be heard up until 1.28. At this moment in the scene, a car can be seen crashing and an explosion is heard. As the crash is seen, the music cut off which highlights to the audience how sudden the crash was and how no one expected it. At 1.38 into the scene you can see people running towards the car and can hear the objects that they are throwing onto the car such as rocks. These sounds are also met with the sounds of everyone in the car screaming. The sounds of the characters screaming shows the audience how scared they are and the panic state that they are in. At 1.46 you can hear the people outside of the car shouting at the ones inside it showing their aggressiveness and their want to get into the car and hurt them, these sounds tell the audience about how dangerous the situation the characters are in is. At 1.50 when the character to try to escape by reversing heir car, a motorbike can be heard and is then shown following them. After this at 2.02 a gunshot is heard and Julian is shot in the neck, this sound is then followed by high pitched noise which I think is in the perspective of Theo and what he is hearing meaning that its diegetic. At 2.06 you can hear the other characters crying. The sounds of them crying were included to highlight to the audience how traumatised they are and how they have lost someone really dear to them. This type of sound also creates a depressing mood both within the film and for the audience as well.

The second scene that I chose to analyse thee sound of is from the film Kingsman. The scene that I have chosen to analyse for the film Kingsman is the church fight scene. YouTube link for this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1WWDBTda2Y Right at the beginning of the scene, or 9 seconds into the YouTube video of it, sudden suspenseful non-diegetic music is heard appearing into the sound mix, which downs the tone of the film can be heard as the antagonist Valentine turns a wheel to activate the phone sim cards in the people’s phones in the church. This type of sound was used in the scene to tell the audience that something important is about to happen that would change the whole mood of the scene, and the tone of the music also makes them think further about what is coming up next. This sound is an example of studio recorded sounded as it was introduced into the scene after it had already been recorded. The sound of the beeping then begins to get faster and louder leading up to what occurs after. It is then followed by a high toned beeping sound at 10seconds into the clip coming from everyone’s mobile phones. This sound would suggest that what is about to happen is going to be huge and change the shape of the scene. The sound is one of the loudest in the scene to attract the audience’s attention to it. At 33 seconds into the scene, the sound of the beeping is cancelled out by a gunshot sound and then chaos begins to happen around the whole church and everyone is fighting each other to the death. The sound of the gunshot signals to the audience that the main thing is starting and that its going to get very violent. From 40 seconds up until 3.45 into the scene, fast paced non-diegetic rock music is playing in the background as Harry is killing everyone in the church.  The sounds when people are punching each other, being stabbed or getting hit by an object in the scene are hyper realistic sounds because of their exaggerated level of sound. I think that this type of music was included during this part of the scene because it highlights the mayhem and violence within the church and how Harry is able to kill almost everyone by himself. The type of music could also symbolise to the audience the adrenaline and anger that Harry is feeling during this scene. At 3.46 into the scene the fights all stop with one chord of an electric guitar to show the cut and end to the violence. At 3.55 into the scene the fighting has finished and only Harry is left alive and the use of piano music is heard playing which usually symbolises peace but in this case, it is the opposite as it wasn't a very peaceful thing to witness. Overall, the use of different sound and music in this scene was done to highlight the violence and intensity of it. There was barely any dialogue used in the scene and I think that this was an effective thing for the directors have put into the film because it means the audience would be able to focus and be more attracted to the fighting.

The third and final film that have analysed the different types of sounds used within it is, the horror film Get Out. The precise scene that I have chosen to pick apart the sound from is the scene when Chris first meets Rose’s parents Dean and Missy. YouTube link for this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35edGMhrIho. The scene is introduced with the sounds of typical dialogue with all of the characters in the scene talking and introducing themselves to each other. During this, there are no other sounds in the sound mix, apart from small naturalistic sound effects, as the creators of the film wanted the members of the audience to be able to hear what they were saying clearly. Having no music playing in the background could have been done to make viewers think that this was an ordinary film because nothing unusual has happened yet and it hasn’t seemed like you were actually watching a horror film, as horror film usually contain frightening low-pitched music playing in the background to create a suspenseful and scary mood. This is an example of a typical sound motif expected to be in horror films which hasn’t been included yet in Get Out. At 32 seconds into the scene, Dean says “When I see a dead deer on the side of the road I think to myself, that’s a start”. This dialogue from Deans character is foreshadowing the type of person that he is and what he does later on in the film where he puts other people in black male’s body’s. I think that this dialogue was intended to show what is going to happen but not many people would know why it was put in the film, however viewers that are watching the scene for a second time such as myself notice what is being said more and how it relates to what happened further on into the film. From now until 1.35 into the scene there isn’t much important sound, just some naturalistic dialogue of Chris and Dean getting to know each other.  At 1.35 Dean says “Up here people are just as messed up in the head as in the city”. This is a key piece of dialogue because again it links back to the type of person that he is and that he is actually crazy. This constant type of dialogue from Dean is to hint to the members of the audience and make realise what type of character he is going to be. At 1.52 when Dean is touching his antiques, low toned and slightly suspenseful music fades into the scene to highlight the awkwardness that Chris is feeling and resembles how uncomfortable he is. This establishing sound is reduced whenever Chris or Dean are talking and is then re-established after they have spoken. This music gets louder slowly as Dean says, “Such a privilege to be able to experience another person’s culture”. After he says this, this is when the music in the background becomes clear and you can see Chris force a smile to make himself seem comfortable. At 2.41 into the scene Dean says, “He almost got over it”, when talking about how his dad lost a race to a black man. This narrative foreshadows the future of the film when we find out that his dad is in the body a black person. Also, he has a small laugh after saying this to try and make it seem funny and so that Chris won’t catch onto anything. At 2.41 Dean says “We had to seal it up, there’s some black mould down there”, referring to his basement. This another key narrative in the film as he is referring to bodies of black people and highlights his sinister character. This is then followed up by Dean saying “My mother loved the kitchen, so we keep a piece of her in here”. This is Dean referring to Georgina as Deans mother is living inside her body. As soon as Dean sys this, the music in the background becomes louder and higher pitched to create a frightening mood for the audience and Chris. Towards the end of the scene, Dean said “We hired Georgina and Water to take care of my parents, when they died I couldn’t bear to let them go”. This is another piece of foreshadowing, because its later revealed that his parents are living inside their bodies which is why he couldn’t get rid of them because they are basically his parents.

The last thing that I am going to be analysing the sound from is a Stacey Dooley documentary which is an example of live location sound because the dialogue from the people she talks was recorded live and wasn’t placed in after during the editing process. The video is called Stacey Dooley investigates drugs online and the YouTube link is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkxa6vs9mIM. Stacey Dooley has recorded this live in scene and has decided to add barely any non-diegetic sound into the sound mix to add realism and emotional impact to her documentary.  The sounds that are heard in the background of her documentaries are mainly ambient naturalistic sounds such as wind and birds. I am going to be focusing on the scene at around 36.30 where Stacey has met up with a drug dealer who has just come from school. When she first sees the boy in his school uniform, you can hear the shock and surprise in her voice at how young he is. Another key sound from this scene is their accents. Stacey and the boy have different accents and Stacey’s one is a lot more mature than the boys one who sounds really young and childish. Meeting a boy this young selling drugs has made Stacey feel really bad and upset at how someone this young could be involved in these things and this would probably have the same impact on the viewers of the documentary. The boy’s immaturity is shown when Stacey asks him to stay and have a conversation with her, which he quickly refuses and says that the drugs were actually mints and painkillers. During this scene in the documentary, Stacey frequently expressed how upset she was that the boy was still in school and how wrong it was. This is a very important and key bit of dialogue from her because it is something that the viewers of the documentary will agree with her on and maybe even have an emotional response or connection to. This means that they will be drawn to her work and be inspired to take action or watch more of her documentaries.

Case study 2 - Kingsman

The scene that I chose to analyse for the film Kingsman is the church fight scene. Right at the beginning of the scene, or 9 seconds into the youtube video of it, suspenseful music as the antagonist Valentine turns a wheel to activate the sim cards in the peoples phones in the church. This type of non diegetic sound was used was used in the scene to tell the audience that something important is about to happen that would change the whole mood of the scene. This sound is then followed by a beeping sound at 10seconds into the clip coming from everyones mobile phones. This sound would suggest that what is about to happen is going to be big and the sound is one of the loudest in the scene to attract the audiences attention to it. At 33 seconds into the scene, the sound of the beeping is cancelled out by a gunshot sound and then chaos begins to happen around the whole church and everyone is fighting each other to the death. The sound of the gunshot signals to the audience that the main thing is starting and that its going to get very violent. Overall, the use of different sound and music in this scene was done to highlight the violence and intensity of it. There was barely any dialogue used in the scene and I think that this was effective because it means the audience should be able to focus and be more attracted to the fighting.

Format and genre

Central Intelligence

The genre of Central Intelligence is both action and comedy. These genres are shown in the film through the use of weapons, fight scenes and car chases. The comedic genre is shown through the two main actors especially the comedian Kevin Hart. The two are always telling jokes and find ways to make the audience laugh.

Luke Cage

The genres used in the TV serial Luke Cage is superhero, action and drama. Luke Cage the main character, is a superhero who tries to take down the villains Cottonmouth and Black Mariah. He wants Harlem to get back to normal and there multiple scenes of action with Luke Cage fighting people whilst they are shooting at him.

NCIS: Los Angeles

The TV series, NCIS: LA has a main genre of crime with the sub genres of action and drama. They are undercover agents who solve crimes and there are lots of action packed scenes with weapons, combat, car changes and interrogations.

Narrative elements

Central Intelligence

The story of Central Intelligence is about two friends from high school that meet up in the future to save America. One of them, Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) is a CIA agent and brings Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart) with him to help him stop terrorists from selling satellite codes. The film began filming on the 6th of May 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia and also throughout Massachusetts. The Central Intelligence follows a linear pattern. This is shown by how the same story is told throughout the whole film and is then solved at the end of it. This is supported by the fact that the film has a clear beginning, middle and end and is simple for viewers to understand whats happening and be able to follow it. The narrative that was used in the film is realist as their is no one that has superhuman powers and the film is set in the modern day.

Luke Cage

The story of Luke Cage is about him trying to stop a crime family based in Harlem. Luke Cage wants to stop Cottonmouth and Black Mariah from committing crimes in his city and wants to restore it back to how it was. The serial was filmed in New York City, specifically creating the environment of Harlem. Luke Cage follows a liner narrative and pattern because it has an ongoing story of Luke Cage stopping crime in his city trying to restore the peace. The serial has a non realistic narrative because Luke Cage has superhuman powers and is fighting crime by himself without approval from the police. At the end of the first season it shows Luke Cage stop Cottonmouth and then Luke Cage ends up in jail because of his past.

NCIS: Los Angeles

NCIS: LA is an example of a TV series meaning that it has a main story obtained and solved in each episode. In this TV series, the team are faced with different crimes in each episode and they have to work together to solve them. The team in NCIS: LA mainly operate undercover so the majority of the episodes show the characters undercover acting as things such as janitors. The TV series in filmed and located in the American city of Los Angeles in an NCIS office in a hidden location. The story includes flashbacks of one of the main characters past (G Callen) about he was shot and the sereis also shows him trying to find out who he is as he was an orphan. At the end of each episode the cases are solved and closed but Callen's past is still left to be solved.

Characters

Central Intelligence

The two heroes in the cast are CIA agent Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) and his friend Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart). The villain in the story is Phil (Aaron Paul) who tries to get satellite codes. The purpose of Bob Stone's character in the movie is to stop the villain from selling the satellite codes. Bob meets his high school friend Calvin Joyner and now that hes involved he has to help Bob Stone with his mission, The purpose of the villain in the film is to sell the satellite codes before being stopped by Bob Stone.

Luke Cage

The hero in the cast of the serial is Luke Cage (Mike Colter) who occasionally receives help from a police officer called Misty Knight (Simone Missick). Th purpose of Luke Cages character is to stop crime in the area of Harlem which he refers to as his city,  The main villains in Luke Cage are Cottonmouth (Mahershala Ali) and Black Mariah (Alfre Woodard). The purpose of the villains in the story is to make as much money as possible through crimes such as weapons dealings and drugs. The villains try to this without being caught by either Luke Cage or the police.

NCIS: Los Angeles

The main NCIS agents in the TV series are G Callen (Chris O'Donnell), Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), Kenzie Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen). The purpose of the agents is to solve the crimes that they are assigned to and to bring criminals to justice. In each episode of NCIS: LA there are different villains and each of them have different purposes.

Themes

Central Intelligence

I would say that the theme of the film Central Intelligence is friendship and freedom. The theme of friendship is highlighted during the film because Bob Stone finds Calvin Joyner on Facebook and they meet again after several years. They then work together to stop terrorists from selling satellite codes with highlights the theme of good vs evil.

Luke Cage

The main theme throughout the TV serial Luke Cage is good vs evil. Luke Cage is the main hero in the show and he fights crime by himself. HE doesn't want recognition for what he is doing and he just wants Harlem to be free of crime.

NCIS: Los Angeles

I would say that there is no theme in this TV series as there is a new storyline every episode with different things happening and different characters involved.

Interesting scenes or camera shots

Central Intelligence

The feature film Central Intelligence includes multiple different camera shots throughout the film. Whenever Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Harts characters are on screen together, there is never a shot of one being higher or superior to the other. This use of camera highlights their friendship and equality. There also multiple interesting scenes of flashbacks of Dwayne Johnson's character to tell the audience about his past.

Luke Cage

The TV serial Luke Cage uses lots of high angle and low angle shots when Luke Cage is up against criminals. I think that these shots are effective and were used because it highlights Luke Cage's superiority to them and informs the audience that he is control of these situations.

NCIS: Los Angeles

In the TV series NCIS: LA i think that the use of movement from the camera are good shots and effective. These shots are usually used when their are car chases as the camera often pans quickly between the vehicles and also zooms out. I think that these shots are effective because they highlight the intensity and adrenaline factor of these scenes. In the show there are also interesting flashbacks of agent G Callen's past because he is a very closed character who the audience and himself so not know about his origin and what the 'G' stands for.

Case Study 1 - Children of Men - David

Scene 1 Opening Scene

The opening scene to the film Children of Men starts off quite differently to other films. Usually when you watch a film, the setting or someone is shown first before anyone begins talking. However, in Children of Men, you can hear a news reporter speaking whilst the screen is black before you eve  see anything. This was a creative thing for the director of the film to include as they knew that it was a unique technique that would draw closer attention from their viewers. Whilst the news reporter is speaking, she says, "the world was stunned today by the death of Diego Ricardo, the youngest person on the planet". It later reveals that he was 18. The use of this spoken word will be useful for the audience because it tells them that the film is set in a strange version of our current world and that the genre of the film is sci-fi. Another thing that this could do is make viewers want to watch even more of the film because they would be confused about how he is the youngest person in the world and is 18 years old.  They would want to watch on as it they would wonder what stopped humans from breeding. When the camera switches to inside the coffee shop and shows the TV, music with a sad tone begins to play and you can hear people crying over his death. The TV shows that the year of Diego's death was 2027 meaning that the film s set in the future. The only person other than the reporter who is heard speaking in this scene is the man who orders coffee and this lets the audience know that he is the main character because he was the only one speaking and placed in the centre of the screen. As the man leaves the coffee shop the camera begins to follow him and show the surroundings. The sounds that can be heard are mainly from vehicles and doesn't sound like the world has advanced very much. Later, the camera then turns to the mans  right and then an explosion is heard and shown on screen. The sound of the explosion was realist but I think that the sound of the woman screaming wasn't realistic because it was very high pitched and was about the same volume of the explosion.

Scene 2 Car Scene

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfBSncUspBk

At the beginning of the car scene, the first thing that the audience hears is some happy and upbeat music. This music in the scene is diegetic as it is coming from the stereo system in the car meaning that characters in the film are also hearing the music. I think that this type of music was included in the scene because it shows all of the characters together and shows Julian and Theo re connecting with each other and makes the audience think that they might get back together. At 2.06 you can hear the other characters crying and how traumatised they are.

Radio advert scripts

Script One

Brand name/product name:

The brand for my advert is Apple and the name of the product is the iPhone 8.

Name of the advert:
The name of my advert is going to be "This is 8".

Tagline:
"Think less, do more".

Timing:
I want my advert to last for exactly 30 seconds.

Regulation Issues:

The most important regulations that I would have to follow are that the advertisement should not be offensive to anyone, should not include things like photosensitive epilepsy, should not be misleading and shot not harm or put children at risk.

First script
Style
The style of the first script and advert will be formal, simple and informative.

Persuasive techniques
For the first script and advertisement the main basis of it is going to be talking about facts about the product and providing the audience with information about the iPhone 8. expect the unexpected

Use of sound bed:
The radio advert will have one sound only which will be an instrumental that is played throughout.

SFX: Instrumental starts playing right at the start in background, it continues for whole advert.

MVO: Introducing the greatest smartphone ever. The new iPhone 8.

MVO: The leading phone brand Apple brings you a new phone, with the fastest experience you can get on a mobile.

Second script

Style
The style of my second script is going to be informal than the first one but will also be informative to the listeners.

Persuasive techniques
The second script will be a conversation between two friends in college who are in a lesson at the time so they will have to speak and will also have them talking about the product's features so the audience know about the product.

Regulations
The most important regulation for the second script is that it doesn't put children at risk as I am going to be doing it with teenagers. This comes under regulatory code 5 and states "Children must be protected from advertisements that could cause physical, mental or moral harm." I also have to make sure that people will not find the advert offensive and intolerable.

SFX: The advert will have the background sound of the college and will also include an instrumental.

MVO 1: Hey, you alright?

MVO 2: Yeah, I'm great, just got the new iPhone 8.

MVO 2: The battery life is double that of last years and the camera quality is too good. There's a lot more though, guess you'll just have to buy one to find out.

MVO 1: Yeah, I guess so.

MVO 2: The new iPhone 8, think less, do more.
Sound: For this last line there will be an upbeat sting that follows each word.

SFX: All background noise such as pupils and teachers talking and the sounds of typing and computers.and music begins to lower and eventually cuts out.

Assignment 26.1 The theory of films

Assignment 26.1 The theory of films

The two films that I have chosen to analyse the genre, content and narrative are The Bourne Identity and The Hunt for The Wilderpeople. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople was released in 24th in June 2016 and The Bourne Identity was released on the 6th of September 2002. The hunt for the Wilderpeople is set in current day New Zealand in the countryside and forests. Oppositely, The Bourne Identity isn't set in only one place but has various locations including, Zurich, Paris, South of France, New York, Washington and Indochina. The director of The hunt for the Wilderpeople was Taika Waititi and the producer was also him, Leanne Saunders, Carthew Neal and Matt Noonan. The director of The Bourne Identity was Doug Liman and the producers was also him, Richard N. Gladstein and Patrick Crowley. The Bourne Identity has a certificate of 12A in the UK and The Hunt For The Wilderpeople has the same certificate of a 12A. I would say that the target audience for The Bourne Identity would be people that enjoy films with a lot of action and for people between the age of 25 upwards because the film is quite difficult to understand and a younger audience wouldn't be  able to understand what happens in the film. The target audience for The Hunt for the Wilderpeople I thin would be for younger people and teenagers. This is because the main character is a teenager and this type of audience would be able to relate to the film. For these two films I am going to be analysing the genre, narrative and film content analysis.

The film, The Bourne Identity is about Jason Bourne who is a US government agent. He doesn't know who he is because he doesn't remember anything before two weeks ago. Bourne wakes up on a boat a the start of the film and sets out to find out who he is and why he isn't able to remember anything. Along the way he meets a woman called Marie who helps him out and he begins to like her. Towards the end of the film, Bourne finds out who he is and who he was working for, he manages to escape the people that were after him and then reunites with Marie right at the end.

The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is about a boy named Ricky who's mother abandoned him so he was taken to live on a farm with a couple, Bella and Hec. Near the beginning of the film, Bella dies meaning that ricky would have to back into care but refuses to so he fakes his death and runs away to the bush with his dog. Hec later finds Ricky in the bush and they both agree to go on the run from the authorities who want to take Ricky back. They end up being caught and then Ricky goes to live with a kind family he met whilst he was on the run and Ricky finds Hec in a care home and asks him to come with him, Hec agrees.

The genre of The Bourne Identity is action/mystery. I would say that the main genre of this film would be action and mystery would come under the sub genre of the film. The Bourne Identity is in the action genre because it uses the typical conventions of that genre. Some of these convention s that are included in this film are fight scenes, weapons, car chases fast camera cuts and movements and etc. The Bourne Identity comes under the sub genre of mystery. This is because when you are watching the film you don't really understand the storyline at the beginning and have to wait until further on in the film to know what is happening. Also, it is also a mysterious film because Jason Bourne is trying to solve the mystery about who he really is. The first fight scene in the film happens at at 11:19 when police officers begin talking and questioning Jason Bourne about what he is doing, he then begins to fight them and as he's the main character of the film he obviously ends up winning the fight.
Throughout the film a lot of guns are shown and Bourne is always being chased by someone with one. This creates tension and suspense foe the viewers because it will make them be constantly fearing for Bourne as he might get killed but this doesn't happen as he manages to take these people out. At 52:48 another typical conevention seen in action films of a high speed chase is shown when Jason Bourne and Marie are being chased by the police.

The story of the film is essentially Jason Bourne trying to find out who he is and who is after him wanting him dead. Along the way he meets a girl called Marie and she goes with him until he tells her to leave as it is too dangerous for her. The film The Bourne Identity relates to Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposites. In the film, the binary opposites are good vs evil which is portrayed as Jason Bourne vs the man after him Alexander Conklin. At 1:43:40 flashbacks are shown when Bourne starts to remember who he is and what he used to do for living. He doesn't really act on what he remembered but wants to still find a way to stop the people that are after him. The film has various locations such as Paris and Zurich because Bourne and Marie go to different countries whilst running from the US agents and ones that are in other countries are chasing them. Having various locations make the film more interesting because it makes it more enjoyable and diverse as it shows off other countries and shows people speaking several languages. The main character and good guy in the film is Jason Bourne who is shown on screen from the start of the movie until the end. Marie is another important character in the film but she isn't shown until 20:11 in the film but is shown until the end of the film.

The audience will probably fell more attached to the character of Jason Bourne and see the film through the way that he does. The audience will want to know about who he is as much as he himself wants to. This means that the audience will also find it hard to follow the story and and will be confused towards the start of the film but as the film gets closer to the end, they will understand who Bourne is and then at the end of the film where he reunites with Marie the audience will feel happy for him. The theme of The Bourne Identity can be seen as revenge because Jason Bourne blames Alexander Conklin and the people that are after him for why he cant remember anything before two weeks. At the end of the film when Bourne finally gets his answers, he now has a burden lifted off his shoulders and meets up with Marie again and he is now happy and they will probably start a life together.

The language used in The Bourne Identity is mainly English but when there are scenes in other countries, people are heard speaking their languages such as police officers at the start if the film speaking French to Jason Bourne. Characters such as Alexander Conklin and other people in his office speak in a formal fashion which highlights that they are authoritative figures and implies that they should be respected. When I was watching The Bourne Identity, I couldn't understand when people were speaking in another language as there were no subtitles shown on the screen. During the police chase at 52:48 there is also some upbeat and fast music in the background and also fast camera cuts. This was included to highlight the intensity of the of the chase and the fast cuts show how fast all the cars were going. There is also another scene at 1:17:41 where fast paced music is used again but this time it is used to emphasise how desperate Alexander Conklin and his team were that they couldn't find Bourne. There is also a use of special effects at 1:47:07 when Bourne jumps off the stairs and used another mans body to cushion his landing, as Bourne is falling he is also shooting people at the same time. At the end of The Bourne Identity the camera zooms and pans out to show the sunny and happy location that the film ends at.

The second film that I chose to analyse was The Hunt for the Wilderpeople. I would say that the genre of The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a drama film with the sub genres of comedy and action. The film comes under the genre of adventure because the story has Ricky and Hec escaping the police by living in the bush for several months. The Hunt for the Wilderpoeple uses a typical convention of an adventure film by using flashbacks. Near the start of the film at 3:41 flashbacks are shown of Ricky's past to show the audience what type of person he is and highlights his disobediance. Another adventure convention that the film uses is exploration, this is first shown in the film at 8:40 when Ricky runs away from the house into the bush, this scene also relates back to the sub genre of comedy because when Ricky is running away, he begins to run out of breathe and doesn't get too far away from the farm. The scene after this shows Bella find Ricky in the bush the next morning and tells him that what he tried to do was funny.

At 1:12:09, a typical convention for the sub genre of action is shown when the three hunters are on screen holding their guns. This scene was included in the film because it makes the audience know that they are the typical bad guys/enemies of the action sub genre. The use of guns makes them seem more dangerous and shows that they have a higher status than Hec and Ricky especially because there's three of them. There is also another convention of the action sub genre of a high speed chase at 1:25;07. At this scene in the film, Ricky is driving the truck with Hec as passenger and they are trying to out run the police.

The main story of The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is about Ricky and Hec surviving in the bush after the death of Hec's wife, Bella. The main reason that they decided to run away into the bush because when Bella died, the child services authority sent a letter to Hec saying that Ricky would have to go back into care. Ricky didn't want to go back to the authorities because he said that the only friend he had there was dead. As a result of this, Ricky decided to fake his death by setting fire to a dummy of himself and running into the bush. Hec later follows Ricky into the bush and they both decide to go on the run from the police. The main character of The Hunt for The Wilderpoeple is a child from a foster hom called Ricky, he is shown in the film from start to finish. The other main character in the film is Hec, he was Bella's husband and Ricky tends to call him uncle. He is basically Ricky's accomplice and they are both on the run from authorities. The setting for The Hunt for The Wilderpeople is based in New Zealand. This setting compliments the basis of the story of the film  because it has a big forest or bush which is where the majority of the film is set. This type of setting compliments the genre of adventure because it is a very big area and gives the characters of Ricky and Hec a large playing field to escape the police. Similar to many other films, in The Hunt for the Wilderpeople the audiecne views the film thorugh the point of view of the main characters. In this film they see the film throught the point of view of Ricky a young boy who keeps switching homes and through Hec a man who's wife has just died, I would say that the message of this film is friendship. This is because at the start of the film Ricky and Hec do not meet eye to eye as Hec doesn't like Ricky because he finds him to be a pest and doesn't like it when Ricky calls him uncle. As the film progresses they learn more about each other and begin to like one another. Then at the end of the film Ricky finds Hec again and asks him to come and stay with him which Hec then agrees to. I think that The Hut for The Wilderpeople can be placed under Propp's theory of character roles. This can be seen because the hero in the film is Ricky, the helper is Hec and the Villain is Paula (the child services officer).  You could also argue that his film could also come under Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposite, it would come under the opposites of good (Ricky) vs evil (Paula).

The language used in he film is a mixture depending on who is speaking with the film. For example the way that Ricky speaks is different to the way that Bella and Hec speak. Ricky speaks very informally and the way in which he speaks highlights how young he actually is and also shows his immaturity as he tends to swear because he thinks he's  a "gangster". Bella and Hec speak more formally than Ricky and they speak with a sort of calmness about them, the way that they speak emphasises their age and also shows their wisdom and that they have seen a lot in life. The only text that is shown on screen is when it tells the audience that there is a new chapter of the film starting. This is unique because barely any films have this and it's a way for the film to help the audience understand what is happening.

The music used in The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is used effectively because it always relates and corresponds to what is happening in the film. For example, when Bella died, the music that played in the background was slow paced and sad. At Bella's funeral there was also a piano playing. This means that the fact she died has been emphasised and helps the audience further understand whats happening. This also happens during the police chase because the background music in that scene is fast paced. The special effects in The Hunt for the Wilderpeople as a percentage of the whole film wasn't a lot as there wasn't too many used. The film uses a lot of camera techniques to highlight the fact the whole film is based around Ricky. There are a lot of close up shots of Ricky's face to show the audience who he is and to express his facial expressions and feelings. One effect that was used during the car chase is when the car that Ricky and Hec were in flipped over. Adding this into the film creates suspense for the audience because for a slight period they don't know what happens to Ricky and Hec if they're injured or dead. Just before the car turns over, there is a close up shot of Hec's face. This camera technique was added to show that he was scared for his life as Ricky was driving and he had not to stop him.

From the analysis that I have done on The Bourne Identity and The Hunt for The Wilderpeople, I can say that they are two good films. From the content above you can tell these two films are different from each other and have two contrary genres. Although there are some similarities and equal narratives and techniques between the two films but not enough to make them seem alike. On the film review website of Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score for The Bourne Identity was 93%, this shows that people enjoyed the film and its contents. The critic review of The Bourne Identity was lower than the audience one at 83% meaning that the critics gave their own harsh review and didn't follow what other people said about the film. The audience score for The Hunt for The Wilderpeople was 91% and the critic score was 97%. These reviews show us that both the audience an the critics enjoyed The Hunt for the Wilderpeople more. Personally, I enjoyed both films and I would recommend both of them to anyone.

Radio Adverts Initial Research 1

The two radio advertisements that I chose to analyse were Coca-Cola’s ‘Coca-Cola Diary’ and Lexus’ ‘Lexus Switch’.

Coca-Cola Diary

Message

This advert has been made for the company Coca-Cola. Radio advert would be a good way for them to do this as lots of people use it such as in their cars or on mobile. The story of this radio advert is about an ice cube. The ice cube is to be chosen and be put into a glass of coke. At the end of the radio advert, the ice cube is finally picked and used.

Style

The style of this radio advert is humorous because the story is funny and creative and makes it stand out from other adverts. This radio advert can also be put under the style of fiction because throughout the whole advert, it is telling the audience the story of the ice cubes everyday life waiting to be chosen and be put into a drink. The style could also be seen as seductive because the voice in the radio advert is trying to communicate to the audience in a friendly way.

Purpose of Advert

The main purpose of this advert is to raise awareness of the bran Coca-Cola and try to get people to but their drinks and products. I would say that this radio advert is more about the brand rather than the actual product. This is because it doesn't mention their product during the majority of the advert because they want to raise the popularity of the brand further. Coca-Cola chooses to continue advertising their brand so that they can remain in the public eye and so that they send a message to their competitors The radio advert doesn't really use the techniques of informational, persuasive, sales and special offers or seasonal awareness.

Use of voiceover

The tone of the voiceover changes throughout the radio advert. At the start of the advert, the voice sounds boring and plain but as the advert comes towards the end it becomes more energetic and happy. The voiceover used is single tone as their is only one person speaking. The voiceover is meant to be the ice cube speaking and then his personality seems to change when its put into a glass of Coca-Cola. This is a unique way of using a voiceover in an advert because it makes it seem as if the product is actually speaking and usually in adverts this doesn't happen and the voiceover is just in the background.

Use of music bed

Music is only used in this radio advert at the end when the ice cube is finally chosen. The music used is up beat and happy to reflect the emotions that the ice cube is feeling. It was filled with excitement because it was someone actually picked it and this means that it wont have to carry on waiting. The use of this upbeat music at the end of the radio advert has been used as a way to persuade listeners to buy their product. The music could make viewers think that if they purchase a drink, their mood will change.

Persuasive techniques

The only persuasive technique that was used in this radio advert was the Coca-Cola song at the end. This song was used to make the listeners remember the advert and also remember the brand and the products they offer. Using only one persuasive technique could be a good thing for this radio advert because it could make the advert stand out to viewers in a more simple way as they wont be bombarded with loads of techniques that could make them dislike the advert and decide to not buy the product.

Lexus Switch

Messgage

This radio advert has been made for the car manufacturer Lexus. The content of the advert is the voice of a man that is narrating throughout the advert about the new car. Radio advert could be a useful and smart way for Lexus to get their message about their new car across to people because a lot of people would be listening to this advert in their cars. This means that Lexus would be meeting their target audience quickly and can then use this to persuade them into buying one of their new cars.

Style

I would say that the style of this radio advert would be formal. This is because the man is speaking in a formal manner to the listeners. This can also make the radio advert seem serious as the mans voice is lacking expression and enthusiasm. People may suggest that this makes the advert seem band or boring but I think that this could make the radio advert come under the style of being seductive. The men speaking in the advert speak in a gentle tone of voice and speak slowly so that they can persuade the listeners in a subtle way. Using seductive techniques could work to persuade listeners because they would find this advert better and easier to listen to than radio adverts when the voiceover is just shouting information towards them.

Purpose

The obvious purpose of this radio advert is to tell listeners about the new Lexus vehicle and to persuade them into purchasing one. The Lexus switch radio advert is persuasive and uses different techniques to do this. Halfway through the radio advert, the man who is speaking switches to another person that says "Did you notice that I'm not the same person you heard speaking at he start of the commercial, we switched". This is an effective persuasive technique for them to use in the advert because it makes the listeners pay closer attention to the advert and they will play the advert several times again to notice the change. Also, by saying "We switched", it makes relevance to the main point of the advert which is the Lexus 'Switch' and is being used as a way to make make listeners 'switch' cars. The radio advert also uses a bit of informational techniques to persuade listeners when the man says "High performance hybrids". This could make viewers feel as if their car isn't good enough and make them want to buy the new Lexus Switch.

Use of voiceover

In the voiceover of this advert, the tone of the people speaking doesn't change but stays continuous throughout the whole advert. At the start of the advert, the voiceover isn't using direct address and talking to directly to the audience but instead is just introducing the car and is talking about the informational facts about the new vehicle. Half way through the radio advert, when the voice changes, the man speaking begins to talk directly to the listeners. This would be an effective technique to be used because it would make the audience feel more involved with the advert. During this part of the advert, the person speaking is using a conversational tone towards the listeners and this could make them feel as if they are part of a conversation and this could be useful in persuading them into buying from Lexus. The use of voiceover in this radio advert was done in a smart way because when the people switched, it wasn't obvious because they sounded very similar and this would again have been used to make listeners pay attention to see if there was actually a change and they may have to keep listening repeatedly to notice the change. Also, the audience listening to the advert multiple times would mean that the message of the advert would stick with them and they would constantly be thinking about Lexus even after the advert has finished.

Use of music bed

In this Lexus Switch radio advert music is used in the background of the whole advert. I think that music was added to the advert to make it more alive and sound appealing to potential listeners. The music used in the advert is very calm and relaxing which could tell viewers that if they purchase the new Lexus, it will make them comfortable and make their lives easier and more relaxed. The use of this gentle music could also be linked to the style of the advert and it being seductive. The music stays continuous in the advert which could suggest that if you buy the new Lexus, your expectations would be met and that nothing would be different or changed.

Persuasive techniques

The main persuasive technique that I noticed being used in this radio advert was the repetitive use of the word "switch'. Although this was done subtly, it is still noticeable. This was used to get listeners to remember the word so that it will stick with them and every time they hear the word they will link it towards the radio advert. This was a good persuasive technique for Lexus to use in their radio advert as it makes the listeners remember what they have just heard.

Regulation guidelines

Regulation guidelines are rules that companies that are making radio adverts will have to follow to make sure that their adverts are not affecting people in a negative way. These guidelines were set up by the Advertising Standards Authority and if a company chooses not to follow them, they could face legal punishments. The most important things that the regulation guidelines state that advertisements should not be offensive to anyone, should not include things like photosensitive epilepsy, should not be misleading and shot not harm or put children at risk. The two companies which advertisements I analysed, Coca-Cola and Lexus have made sure that they have been working within these guidelines and that their advertisements do not violate them. These companies know why they have to follow these guidelines and do so because they do not want to put themselves at risk. If one of these did not follow the regulation guidelines, they would be putting themselves at risk and could damage their high reputation. Although, they have been careful to meet and stay in these guidelines, Lexus will haver to think carefully about their radio advertisement and consider that it may seem misleading which is a violation of the regulation guidelines. In the Lexus Switch advertisement, it states that the persons voice has switched but this could be classed as being misleading because the two voices sound very alike and it is very difficult to tell if they have actually switched.
